Mozambique rich in fishery resources

Mozambique is a country with great fishing potentialities, derived from its coastal location, with a length of 2.750 kilometers and 200 miles off the coast of Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) constituting 586,000 km of surface of ocean water masses,having a diversity of fishery resources.

Industrial fishing and semi-industrial are the sub-sectors involved in commercial fishing activities, whose production is mainly for the export market. However, it is important to note that the development strategy for the sub-sector of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture aims to in¬crease production in these subsectors and create mechanisms to add value to these products so that they access the international market as well as improve supply to the internal market, contributing to food security and nutrition of populations and improved living conditions.

In short, the country has a potential of fisheries resources estimated at around 300,000 tons: 269,000 tons at sea and 31,000 tonnes in inland waters and in the aquaculture sub-sector the potential is estimated at 1.335 million tons: 542.5 thousand tons mariculture and 741 000 tonnes of fresh water species.

AQUACULTURE

Mozambique has favorable climatic conditions and availability of areas for aquaculture. In terms of resources and development potential of ma¬rine aquaculture, the coast of Mozambique is divided into:

  • Northern Region - favorable for mollusks, with conditions also suitable for shrimps;
  • Central – Northern Region - favorable for shrimps, mullet and man¬grove crab;
  • Southern Region - favourable for shrimps, crab and fish. Areas such as the Bay of Inhambane and parts of Maputo Bay have conditions fa¬vourable for mollusks.

There is also potential for marine algae in northern part of the country between Mocimboa da Praia and northern Nampula and Inhambane and in the southern region.
